The Correlation Between Prophesying and Praising God

Moreover David and the captains of the army separated for the service some of the sons of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, stringed instruments, and cymbals. . . .

who prophesied with a harp to give thanks and to praise the Lord.

1 Chronicles 25:1, 3 (portions)

Is that amazing, or what? These men were singing praise to the Lord with instruments, which was referred to as . . . prophesying! Singing and playing instruments to praise the Lord = prophesying. Wow! For those of us headcover-ers who wonder, “What, exactly, is ‘prophesying’?” this helps to answer that question.

In 1 Corinthians 11:5 we are told that “every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head . . .” This verse teaches that women must have a covering on their head while praying or prophesying. Prophecy could include predicting the future (think Old Testament prophets), but a more general interpretation of what it means to “prophesy” could be put this way: prophesying is speaking the words of God. So, a person might receive a message straight from God to that person’s heart and will tell others what he/she has heard; or, a person might repeat a passage from the Bible, which is God’s message to us in written form. My personal belief is that the latter possibility is more likely to occur. We don’t exactly need to get fresh messages; the already-revealed Word is always fresh, through the Spirit’s power. The Word of God is living and powerful, no matter how much time has passed since it was first written down.

I think that the men whom David set apart to serve God with music were literally singing songs straight from the Psalms, word for word, since prophecy involves speaking God’s words.

Here’s another example from the Bible of prophecy being correlated with praise:

. . . And it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with a stringed instrument, a tambourine, a flute, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying.

1 Samuel 10:5 (last part)

This text is referring to Saul when he was anointed king of Israel. He was instructed to go to a certain city where he would meet this group of prophets. After meeting up with them, the Spirit of God came upon him, and he began to prophecy, too. So, playing musical instruments and singing are actions which are seen to be connected with prophesying in this instance, as well.

What might that mean for us? Perhaps this: if we are in church singing praise — even if it isn’t word-for-word Scripture (but it will probably have some phrases and ideas from the Bible) — we should cover. (We might even choose to cover if we are singing praise at home with our families.) We should cover because we are participating in the worship of the gathered assembly of believers; we are “prophesying” through our praise and thanksgiving in the form of song (and instrument playing).

AWEsome!

  1. Ha – I love your enthusiasm ! Whatever their denomination and whatever the pressure from society ALL Christian couples should embrace the FACT that family planning is up to God and only God, that all forms of birth control are sinful and that artificial contraception is an abomination.

    1. Thank you, Susanne! I agree. It sounds radial, but it’s really quite biblical. And not too long ago, what sounds radical today was the accepted view in mainstream culture, as I understand it.

      1. It was absolutely mainstream in every Christian denomination in the past and it is only since the 1930 Lambeth Conference when the Anglican Church to its shame broke with that Biblical Truth and spread the moral rot.

    1. Obviously it is ultimately up to our husbands (and Priests) what happens and what they accept in our respective Churches. But I do think that all Christian women should reject any form of contraception completely.

  2. As parents I do think that as and when it is appropriate we can ensure that our children understand this from the start so that it is a natural assumption (as of course it has been for millennia) that marriage is first and foremost for and about bringing all the children God chooses to bless you with into the world in a a stable environment.

I also believe that we need to drum it into our daughters that whether or not they are blessed with children, however many and whatever the circumstances they should submit to God and know that birth control in any form is a shameful sin.

  3. Susanne, I think you are right that it is very important to train our children in the biblical view of marriage and having children. If we are lazy in this respect, then they will probably pick up on the majority view and follow that. We have to be very intentional in our approach, I think.
    Good points!

    1. Absolutely true as mothers of daughters we have a very strong responsibility to teach them. But as Christians of whatever denomination I think we should also campaign against the culture of birth control and against the teaching and availability of contraception.

      1. I agree, Susanne. There is a need to live in obedience in our own lives; but there is also a need to open the eyes of others to the damage they are doing to themselves and those around them. Because we care, we can’t help but spread the message of the truth. The truth will set you free.

      2. I honestly believe that it would be best to go back to when contraception was illegal. Of course people would still occasionally use it but it would gradually disappear.

  4. Jessica,
I was wondering what’s your opinion on using modern music instruments at church worship. I have been to worships where the praise teams used lasers.
My church supports contraception. Many believe that’s a God-given blessing just like antibiotics and pain-killers.

  5. Hi, Irina!
How are you doing? I hope you are doing well and have found a safe and natural solution to the situation you told me about earlier.

To start out with: Well, I agree with Susanne that contraception is NOT a blessing; I believe that it is a man-made curse. But, many churches do not see it that way, which greatly grieves my heart. I cry out to God constantly for Him to open up our eyes to the truth and deliver us from our own foolish, destructive choices. I pray for more and more people to make this their heart’s cry, too.

Your question about modern music instruments: my opinion is that it depends on how we play them. There are many instruments mentioned in the Bible as being useful in our praise of God; it is my belief that if the guitar and the keyboard had existed in those days, they would have been mentioned, too. I think it is not so much the instrument, but how we use it that counts.

So, is there a spirit of self-glorification that bothers you about the worship team? Is it worldly in the way the team dresses and acts? Is the music style disruptive to your inner peace? I think these are all good questions to ponder over.

Our church is in the middle, I think. It isn’t a hymns-only church, but neither does it seem too over the top to me, either. I would rather some things were different, but we continue to go for the things that we like, and try to overlook the things we don’t like. There is no perfect church, since there are no perfect people. Reminding myself of that helps me to keep things in perspective.

    What are your thoughts?

  6. Hi Jessica! Great post you wrote and I love the Duggars and their friends the Bates. I wish churches today would embrace children as blessings and discourage birth control. I read a story recently about a couple from Nigeria who had been trying for 17 years to conceive. The Lord blessed them with sextuplets! Three boys and three girls and they are as cute as can be!

    1. What a wonderful story. I completely agree, all Churches should teach couples against it and all women and girls should understand that it is a sin.
