John 18:37-38
I think most of us can relate to the desire to define what truth is. The text quoted above is part of a conversation that occurred between Jesus and Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. The Romans worshiped many gods. Were those gods real? Could the answers to life be found in dedicating oneself to religious rituals? Some people did not believe in the gods; they uplifted philosophy and human reasoning as the key to understanding our existence. I imagine that others may have simply begun to give up on there being any answers at all. Perhaps Pilate was in this group. His question carries with it a note of cynicism, as if he is asking, “Does truth even exist–and if it did, how could we possibly find it?”
A quest for the truth requires more than just a critical attitude. If we truly want to discover where meaning lies, we’ll need something else: raw, fearless honesty. Many people settle for a system of belief that fits best with how they WANT to see the world. Some people want to believe certain things about themselves that make them feel more in control of their lives; sometimes they don’t want to face the reality of the ugliness deep within their hearts.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 14:6
Jesus clearly says that HE is the truth. How do we know whether He is or not? By testing His claim. By reading the Bible for ourselves, and not just taking someone else’s word for it. What did Jesus ACTUALLY say? What do the Scriptures REALLY teach? Does it fit with the archaeological record? With history? As you are investigating, I challenge you to do something radical: pray to Jesus and ask Him to show you whether He is the truth or not. Believe that He will answer you. Wait for something incredible to happen.

This piece of advice is paramount for any Christian to understand. This is the first step in our journey in knowing God. We are so privelaged to have our Bibles readily available.

I agree. So many misconceptions could be avoided if we would just pick up the Bible and read it for ourselves. Loving God’s word and reading the Bible over and over again should be the lifestyle of every Christian.
