Without Excuse

{FEBRUARY, 2015}

Is God capable of sending people to hell? Even those who have never heard the name of Jesus in all their lives?  The Bible says we are all without excuse. God is no less loving if He condemns people to hell for not believing in Him despite their remoteness or ignorance of the Bible. I know that I have just made a very bold statement. “How could a loving God damn people to hell if they’ve never had the opportunity to hear the gospel?” Here’s how:

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold [suppress] the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse; Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

Romans 1:18-25

Dear friends, the whole world is on its way to hell already, because of the sin-nature we inherited from the first man, Adam!

“Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

Instead of being shocked that anyone could be sentenced by God to hell, we should rather be surprised at God’s mercy in saving any of us at all! For all creation shouts out loud that GOD IS REAL! GOD MADE US! GOD LOVES US! God has clearly shown Himself to us, and we ignore Him?

Have you ever noticed how everything on the planet is just the right size for us? We don’t live like little dolls in a world of gigantic proportions. We aren’t miniature creatures living in a “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” scenario. Look:

apple-tree-pictures-images-photos-960498577… that apple dangling from the tree is at just the right height for you to reach up and grab it from the branch. Perfect.

… that tree is standing at just the right height for you to sit underneath its spreading foliage for shade while you munch on that apple which is just the right size to fit in your mouth. Perfect.

… that cool grass upon which you are resting forms a natural carpet beneath you, cushioning your body and pillowing  your head. Perfect.

… that little flower you notice beside you, which you gently lift to smell, is just the right size for you to pluck it off its stem and raise it to your nose. Perfect!

God has revealed Himself to us in the world that He created! We can see evidence of Him everywhere! To be an atheist, one must have a very hard heart indeed. In fact, atheism is not without its own religion, of sorts. When that God-shaped hole inside of our hearts is left empty, we will always attempt to fill it with something else. In an attempt to escape all religion, the atheist may find himself/herself actually embracing the primitive, pagan forms of spirituality we thought we had left behind!

There is no neutral position. Either we choose Jesus Christ, or we remain in the family we were born into, the devil’s family. No, we are not all God’s children. We are all His creation, but if we want to become His children, we must reject our natural family (the world), and allow Him to adopt us into His spiritual family by believing in Jesus Christ. We must be born againby believing that Jesus was a real man, also fully God; He died for our sins, taking the punishment we deserve upon Himself, out of His awesome love for us; then, He rose from the dead on the third day, and afterward ascended into heaven to the right hand of the Father. He will one day return to earth to judge all mankind. We must believe these things with all our hearts, and make the firm decision to follow Jesus if we want to be saved. For, if we do not, on judgement day, we will have no excuse.

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God … For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

John 3:3, 16-18

If we seek the truth with all our hearts, God will give us more light. We start out by recognizing the hand of God in creation. Then as we burn to know more about the true God, He reveals Himself to us by bringing us into contact with His word, so that we might hear of His Son Jesus.

Will you make the choice to believe in Jesus as your Savior?

    • Your words, Sanae, are so wise and beautiful! Thank you for your input.

Yes, I agree with you. “We live in a broken world, but we can still have hope.” Amen! Instead of looking around us and seeing only all the ugly things (which are real and very sad), we should recognize the grace and mercy of God in all the good things! And especially that He sent His Son Jesus to rescue us!

I always appreciate it when you comment! Thank you.

  2. Dear Jessica. Very well said. Brave, straightforward, crystal clear. The truth is that simple as you manifested but why we modern men are making Jesus’ Words so complicated. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6).

I know one reason why sometimes, I DON’T want to accept His truth like a child. It is because, it will make me really crazy to think that most of my family, friends and people around me will ACTUALLY go to hell, if they continue to go without accepting Christ. I DON’T want to believe that! But as you wrote to us, it is TRUE.

And if it is true,,, really really true, then how can I just sitting in my room and not telling people about Jesus salvation? So, all these things clearly show my lack of faith. Oh, God, grant me the faith and live up to it!

Thank you for this powerful post!

    • Dear Kinuko,
I know how you feel when you say that you sometimes don’t want to think about it because you might go crazy!

What you have shared is very true, and very convicting! Yes, we need to keep on pointing others to Jesus, the ONLY Way. The ONLY Truth. And the ONLY source of Life! Everything else is just fake, just grasping at the wind.

      Thank you for your insights!

      • Dear Jessica,

This post (Without Excuse) has left a tremendous effect on my soul, Jessica. It pierced to the division of soul and spirit with its sharp two-edged sword (Heb 4:12). It revealed my hidden lukewarmness. It also revealed the fact that even though I had refuted “universalism” as a false Gospel, I was living as if I was such a one. In a word, your post awaked me. I was awaked that I must cling to this absolute truth even if people label me intolerant fundamentalist. You are so brave. I respect you and love you. Kinuko

P.S. You post drove me to write this very issue on my Japanese blog today. I linked your post as well.

  3. Dear Kinuko,
Thank you for sharing so honestly your feelings! I also, struggle with lukewarmness and fear of what people will think. Maybe we can encourage each other in this, and spur each other on to good works!

  4. Jessica,
I finally got a chance to visit your blog. I love it. First thing that jumps into my head is psalm 19–The heavens declare the glory of God.
It’s hard for me to grasp that reality because I am the only n my family ( to my knowledge) who is a Christian. But the Lord knows the beginning from the end.
P.S. Thank you for reading my head covering testimony,

    • Dear Irina,
Thanks for your comment — I’m glad that you dropped by! Yes, the heavens DO declare the glory of God — Amen to that! And thanks for pointing that out.

It must be hard for you to be the only Christian in your family, and I would like to pray for your family, that God would speak to their hearts, and help them to believe, too. Keep on being a light!

    • Dear Irina,I was once also only one christian in my family. My parents and sibling do’nt accept Jesus still now.My church messanger told us before that only one believers in families are representativs of their families, and they have responsibility to stay in God and pray for their family members.Yes, I agree. I think you are also representative in your family. I believe God never forget our family because they have kept to give us more, more than a cup of water. I will also pray for your family. Please pray for mine, too.Thank you.

  5. Dear Irina, together with Jessica, I also want to pray for the salvation of your family (every Monday). I know how you feel because I am also the only Christian in my family in Japan. I am also familiar with Greek/Russian Orthodox church and its beliefs because I am living in Greece. I have had many dialogues with them. Sometimes I wonder it might be more difficult to live as a believer in a (so-called) Christian state (than in a pagan nation), because majority of them think they are the real Christians and condemn you as heretics. This is hard, very hard. We will stand by you, Irina! from Kinuko
